Why I need to care about what I’m creating — note to self

Dear Me,

I’ll be honest Louise, I feel like you’re in a bit of a slump at the moment. You haven’t made a Tableau Public viz in over a month and you haven’t written a blog in two weeks. For you, this is abnormal. While in training at the Data School, you were churning out vizzes about once a week and blog posts about twice a week. It’s been two weeks since DS11 graduated from the Data School and have been out helping clients. Maybe that’s why you haven’t made anything… Or maybe that’s what you’re telling yourself but in reality, you just can’t think of anything.

The Best of DS11

This week is DS11’s last week of training. Next week, we’ll all be split up and sent to our placements for the next 6 months. We probably won’t all be back together for a while so I’ve been feeling quite reflective. Throughout the past 4 months, we have done some amazing work and in this post, I would like to highlight the vizzes and blogs that are personally my favourite. DS11 has produced so much useful and incredible content over the past few months and this post can’t possibly cover it all so be sure to check out our Twitters and Tableau Public profiles.

Favourite Viz : One

How could I have a favourite viz section and not include this beautiful viz by Ellie. This viz was done for Dashboard Week Day 1 and deservedly got Viz of the Day! Check it out here. Isn’t the snow incredible?!

How to Embed Spotify in your Vizzes

For my TIL Christmas Song viz in Figure 1 (see it here!), I embedded a Spotify playlist so you can listen to the music in the viz as you explore. Embedding a Spotify playlist/ track/ album can be great for adding another dimension to your vizzes. For example, they can supplement a viz about podcasts, movie soundtracks, or other musical topics.

Doing this though, was not as easy as I expected. I expected a simple ‘copy playlist link’ from Spotify and paste into the Web Page object on Tableau Desktop (Figure 2) and boom! Embedded playlist. Nope.
